As part of his building crusade, Dylan Ratigan carried FireflyLED from The Regulars to Jimmy Fallon’s show. Pretty dang cool, eh?

The Song of the Ungirt Runners by Charles Sorley

We swing ungirded hips,
And lightened are our eyes,
The rain is on our lips,
We do not run for prize.
We know not whom we trust
Nor whitherward we fare,
But we run because we must
Through the great wide air.
The waters of the seas
Are troubled as by storm.
The tempest strips the trees
And does not leave them warm.
Does the tearing tempest pause?
Do the tree-tops ask it why?
So we run without a cause
‘Neath the big bare sky.

The rain is on our lips,
We do not run for prize.
But the storm the water whips
And the wave howls to the skies.
The winds arise and strike it
And scatter it like sand,
And we run because we like it
Through the broad bright land.

Thought this was interesting - can’t believe there is so much complexity with shoe selection.

Austin 2010 Half Marathon

Ran my first real ‘race’ this weekend and I am officially hooked.  Never would have thought it, but the atmosphere of a big race (15,000 registrants) and huge spectator crowds all over the course was a huge plus.  Before running this half, I was pretty sure that I would not have much interest in taking the big next step to the full.  I completely changed my mind on Sunday.  I am putting next year’s Austin Marathon on my calendar.

The race was pretty tough, although I beat my goal of 1:50:00 with a 1:48:56 which translate into a 8:18/mile pace.  I started out too fast, which I think is a pretty common rookie mistake.  My splits were 8:27, 8:18, 7:59, 7:59, 7:49, 7:56, 8:04, 8:20, 8:34, 8:42, 8:25, 8:33, 8:51.  As you can tell I really slowed down when I hit the hills at the end of the course.  My colleague and ‘coach’ Juan was running with me from miles 4-13 and he was a HUGE help.  I would have finished much slower at the end without his encouragement and humor.

Andrea and the kids were on the course and at the finish which was also a big boost for me.  She had to lug all four kids around in the car all morning and then navigate everyone around downtown and the crowds.  She was awesome.  Very supportive of me running the race and was a trooper on all the weekend mornings that I was away running.

So, training for the full marathon begins.  I am looking forward to it.

Advanced Garmin Workouts

I used the Forerunner 305 Advanced Workout feature for this morning’s intervals:

  1. 1.5 mile warmup at 9:00-10:00/mile pace
  2. 1.0 mile at 8:00/mile pace
  3. 1 minute rest
  4. Repeat steps 2-3 4 times
  5. 1.5 mile easy 9:00-10:00 pace

I had to read the manual to figure out how to do it, but it worked very well.  Pretty cool that it will not only tell you when step are complete, but it will also beep at you if you are outside of the target pace range.  I spent most of reps 2-3 outside of the pace range (I couldn’t keep up) so it beeped at me most of the workout.

I am loving this watch.  Now, if it would just do the running for me….

It is most common in children, particularly those in unhealthy living conditions.
So this is a quote from Google Health on the causes of a skin rash that my three year old daughter has been diagnosed with.  Hmm
